What is Salik?
Salik is Dubai's electronic toll gate system managed by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The name Salik means "clear" or "smooth" in Arabic, reflecting the system's goal of keeping traffic flowing without requiring vehicles to stop at toll booths. All toll charges are deducted automatically as your vehicle passes through a Salik gate using RFID technology via a tag mounted on your windscreen.
Salik was introduced in Dubai in 2007 and has expanded significantly since then. Every registered vehicle in Dubai is required to have a Salik tag if it uses any of the toll gate roads regularly. Visitors and tourists driving rental cars will find that Salik charges are handled automatically by the rental company and billed accordingly.
Current Salik Gates in Dubai
As of 2026, Dubai has multiple Salik toll gates operating across key routes. These include gates on Al Garhoud Bridge, Al Maktoum Bridge, Sheikh Zayed Road near Mall of the Emirates, Al Salam Tunnel, Airport Tunnel, and several others across major arterial roads. New gates continue to be added as Dubai's road network expands.
Each gate charges AED 4 per pass. There is no daily cap on the number of times you can be charged, so if you pass through multiple gates in a single journey, each pass is charged separately. However, if you pass through the same gate within 15 minutes, the second pass is free.
Salik Free Hours and Exemptions
Salik operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with no free hours on most gates. However, certain gates have specific free periods during off-peak hours — always check the RTA website for the latest schedule as this can change. Vehicles exempted from Salik charges include emergency vehicles, military vehicles, and vehicles belonging to certain government entities.
Motorcycles are not required to have Salik tags and are not charged at toll gates. Electric vehicles registered in Dubai receive a discount on Salik charges as part of the UAE's green initiatives.
How to Top Up Your Salik Account
Maintaining a positive balance in your Salik account is essential. If your balance runs out, you will be fined AED 50 for each gate you pass through without sufficient balance. You can top up your Salik account through the Salik app, the RTA website, approved retail outlets, or by calling the Salik customer service line.
The minimum top-up amount is AED 50 and you can set up auto top-up through the app to ensure your account never runs out. Keeping track of your Salik balance is just as important as managing your parking payments — both are part of being a responsible, fine-free driver in Dubai.
